WHAT TO BRING: What to Bring: Tramping gear including:
Tramping Pack (with pack liner) and filled with sufficient gear as if you were going tramping for a weekend. Make sure everything is watertight! (Dry bags work well).
Plenty of warm clothing including wind/rain jacket, depending on weather (quick dry clothing is preferable as you will be going to get wet, wear thermal leggings with quick dry shorts over the top, tramping boots and gaiters if you have them).
Sun hat, sunscreen. Change of clothes & towel as you will be getting wet. A warm drink, water bottle, lunch & snacks.
Bring a camping chair, pen and paper if you wish to take notes during the theory aspect of this course. Please note there are no public toilets at the river.
WHEN: FIELD TRAINING - Saturday 25 January 2025
TIME: 09.00 am – approx 3.00pm
VENUE: Waimakariri River
MEET: "The Willows" Thompsons Road off Old West Coast Rd.
Directions would be travel approx. 13km down West Coast road, turn right onto Thompsons road (turns to gravel) towards Waimakariri river. Meet at the carpark by the public toilets. The venue for the theory will be in this vicinity, the practical will be an approx. 1km drive down the river along a gravel road. Grid reference is NZTM E1545716 N5187236
This is a practical course which will include:
Reading the river: when not to cross and where to cross. Practicing: crossing techniques, pack floating and escape from pack entrapment. You do not need to be a confident swimmer to do this course.
Cost: $70.00 per person
