The UN has declared 2026 the year of pastures and shepherds. The aim is to support traditional methods of farming, sheep breeding and landscape care. At the Ostrava Wool Fest event, you can meet those whose lives are closely connected not only with sheep breeding, but especially with the processing of one of the many important production commodities – sheep wool.Place: National Agricultural Museum Ostrava, Vítkovice 3033, 703 00 Ostrava-Vítkovice, Czech Republic
The aim of the event is to effectively connect all links in the supply chain, which begins with sheep breeding on farms and ends mainly in the clothing or home accessories of end consumers.
Program
Friday, February 27, 2026
The morning will be set up for school groups, who will gradually learn as much information as possible about wool and its processing and the tradition of sheep breeding.
In the afternoon, there will be a public opening of the tapestry by A. Kybal and his students from the Prague UMPRUM, "Natural Wealth of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic" (1965). This monumental, 10-meter wide and 3-meter high, tapestry from the collections of Prague Castle is made of undyed sheep wool, apparently of Czech origin, and will be on display for the public at the NZM Ostrava until May 31, 2026.
An important part of both days of the program will be a live exhibition of sheep breeds with wool or combined utility, including Saturday demonstrations of sheep shearing.
Saturday, February 28, 2026
On Saturday, the National Agricultural Museum Ostrava will come alive with a textile market. Thirty Czech, Slovak and Polish artisan textile creators and quality local brands will be presented. All of them, in their finished products and creative semi-finished products (fibers, yarns, etc.), show the wide possibilities of using sheep wool.
The interactive educational part on Saturday will be filled with a series of demonstrations and mini-workshops on the manual craft and artistic processing of sheep wool.
As part of professional education, this day, the lecture block will pay attention to the history and present of sheep wool production and textile production, especially with regard to the region of North Moravia and Cieszyn Silesia. In the context of the future, answers will be sought to questions related to innovations in the processing of sheep wool, which is preferred as a fiber for permanent textile sustainability.
Throughout Saturday, it will be possible to taste farm dairy and meat sheep specialties - among the most interesting is the so-called shepherd's pot.
