ORYC’s major work of the year is our Spring Concert on May 5, 2024, 3:00-5:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 174 Wilbrod Street, Ottawa. We are very excited to be performing Joseph Haydn’s Creation, considered by many to be one of his masterpieces. The oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the Book of Genesis. As always for our Spring concert, our choir will be accompanied by a professional orchestra.
Another thrill for the choir to perform at our Spring Concert, and hopefully for you, our audience to hear, will be the premiere of a complementary choral composition, “Inferno” written by ORYC students and coordinated by our Composition Intern, Madox Terrell with the libretto derived from Dante’s Inferno as well as texts written by members of the Choir.
This concert is a commentary on the present-day concerns surrounding the climate emergency and the general mistreatment of the environment due to human activity. Haydn’s Creation casts an image of an idyllic paradise in the form of the earth, a gift to humanity and the abundant species of our planet. Inferno provides the antithesis to this paradise, highlighting the reality that we are in danger of destroying paradise and our common home. This new work, while a criticism, ends optimistically, in that, all is not lost should we work together as a society to meaningfully address climate change and the destruction of our natural environment.
