ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY:
Our Thousand Days tells the story of Japanese American imprisonment during World War II through deeply personal narratives rooted in the Pacific Northwest. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, Japanese Americans and Japanese nationals in the Pacific Northwest were forcibly removed and imprisoned in concentration camps without trial or due process. Filmmaker Andrew Inaba's story looks back at two women who were children at the time of their imprisonment, revealing a story of resilience against injustice that resonates today.
Through survivor testimonies, archival materials, original animations, and on-location storytelling across Washington and Oregon, the series examines how this history continues to resonate today- offering urgent lessons about systemic injustice, resilience, and the lasting impact on regional identity.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER:
Filmmaker, second-generation Japanese-American, storyteller, and community connector are the identities that fuel Andrew Inaba’s work. With over 15 years of production experience leading cross-functional teams, Andrew brings strong production management expertise alongside his personal connection to this story. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest with Japanese heritage, Andrew embodies the blended generational experience of Japanese-Americans in this region with a father who is full Japanese (first generation) and a mother who is half Japanese (second generation).
While his grandparents were fortunate to avoid imprisonment during WWII, his life has been shaped by the echoes of this history- evident in the cautious, sometimes fearful outlook his parents adopted after being raised in a community bearing the deep scars of displacement and loss. Their perspectives were molded by the experiences of neighbors and friends who lived through the imprisonment, creating an intergenerational wariness that influenced his own understanding of belonging in America.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
The evening will also include the official unveiling of the newest docuseries initiative from Cascade PBS, Origins.
