Organoids in Dogs and Cats – New Tools for Novel Treatments

Since organoids derived from adult stem cells can be cultured from any epithelial tissue and their cancers, this technology holds vast potential for disease modelling in canines and felines. For example, in vitro models of lung disease, hepatitis, pancreatitis etc. could be developed from diseased animals, to test potential novel treatments before they are used in clinical cases. To this end, we have recently established a bioarchive encompassing canine organoid cell lines from liver, pancreas, lung, bladder, kidney, ovaries, epidymidis, endometrium and cornea. In this seminar, we will discuss pertinent applications of these technologies and show how organoids from companion animals could revolutionize the approach to many diseases frequently seen in clinical practice.
