A free, five-hour training to assist health care & direct service providers in using Lethal Means Counseling to prevent suicide.
About this Event

Reducing access to lethal means, such as firearms and medications, can significantly impact whether a person experiencing thoughts of suicide lives or dies.

Oregon Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (OCALM) Training is a fantastic opportunity for healthcare and direct service professionals to expand their knowledge and skills in using Lethal Means Counseling with an informed, collaborative, and respectful approach. This five hour training focuses on how to reduce access to the methods people use to K*ll themselves. It covers who needs lethal means counseling and how to work with people at risk for suicide—and their families—to reduce access.

Oregon CALM is a suicide prevention training that is neither anti-gun nor anti-Medic*tion. Given the focus on lethal means counseling, course content and discussions will cover these topics in depth. This training meets a portion of the legislative mandate for suicide-specific continuing education for all mental health and behavioral health roles. Participants may receive a certificate of completion and/or 4.5 CE's (Oregon NASW or MHACBO), either of which can be submitted to other credentialling boards for Continuing Education Credits.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand why means matter through local and national data, relevant research, and practice scenarios
  • Learn the most effective ways to address means with individuals who firearms through Oregon-specific research, video demonstrations, and practice scenarios
  • Build confidence in conducting lethal means counseling related to firearms, medications, and other means with clients at risk of suicide

Join us at the new Hillsboro Recovery center located at 5250 NE Elam Young Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124 for this in-person event. The training will be held in Training Room A. Registration is capped at 30 participants and is required to attend.
