The congregation of Seattle First Baptist Church (SFBC) and the Evergreen Association of the American Baptist Churches - USA invites all our members, friends and neighbors to witness and support John Malcomson in his ordination to Christian chaplain ministry.Seattle First Baptist Church is a justice-oriented, inclusive, and intergenerational community. At SFBC, inclusion is all-encompassing and affirming. SFBC welcomes all of who you are and celebrates you as you continue to become your whole self. Words matter at SFBC. Our church means what we say. These words are the core principles that define our community and guide us in living our faith.
About John:
Currently, John is an interfaith chaplain with Providence Regional Medical Centers. He was raised in the American Baptist denomination as his father and grandfather were American Baptist ministers. His mother was on the cradle roll of Seattle First Baptist. John also became interested in Zen Buddhism after visiting South Asia in 1990. Without ever leaving his Christian foundation, he studied in practice Buddhism for many years before becoming an ordained Buddhist minister in the Vietnamese Zen tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh in 2017.
John completed the Upaya Zen Center’s Socially-Engaged Buddhist Chaplaincy program in 2019, attended the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University for two years, and graduated from Claremont School of Theology with a Masters of Divinity in 2023, including a concentration in Interfaith Chaplaincy.
John is a longtime member of SFBC, with his partner, Heidi. He’s also a member of the Mindfulness Community of Puget Sound (Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism), and active with Interfaith Community Sanctuary.
There will be a coffee hour after the regular Sunday morning worship service, enhanced by heavy h'ors d'ouevres.
John invites friends to bring cookies to share at an informal reception after the service (gluten-free cookies encouraged).
