Eleven musicians, mostly under 35, form the Orchestra Nazionale Jazz Giovani Talenti (ONJGT), or the Italian Young Talents National Jazz Orchestra. It maintains an admirable balance between female and male presences: unfortunately jazz has historically always left little room for women, and the ONJGT definitely wants to reverse this anachronistic trend. Band leader Paolo Damiani also wants to stretch musical boundaries, through his compositions. Alongside horn players he leaves plenty of room to string instruments, not in the least the double bass and cello he plays himself. He also includes compositions written by the band members and soloists.
The ONJGT made its live debut in 2014 in Florence, at the Teatro Puccini. In 2018 the orchestra toured extensively through Italy, and in 2019 it recorded the album Oscene Riots for the Parco della Musica Records label. Alongside its double bassist and conductor, Paolo Damiani is also the composer for the orchestra. He fulfilled similar roles in infamous ensembles such as the Italian Instabile Orchestra and the French ONJ (Orchester National De Jazz).
