About this Event
This is Singapore’s most colourful shopping paradise. At a glance, it may seem that Orchard Road is now devoid of any old history. With its bright lights, new glassy buildings - and glitzy nightlife, one is forgiven for thinking there is nothing “old” along the entire road. It may seem so – but if one looks “over the shoulder”, there are still some snippets that may remind us that Orchard Road once began Life, just like anywhere else. It was “agricultural” to begin with – hence “Orchard Road”.
Today, Uncle Chris will take you behind the façade, and show you what used to lie beyond. Most tours are done in 2 hours. At 2 hours, the tourist can get an informative tour nicely wrapped up. I am asking a little more. In return, I will give you the ins and the outs of Orchard Road, complete with all the high life and high society.
We’ll begin with the arrival of CK Tang back in 1958 - when the entire Ngee Ann Building (Takashimaya) was nothing more than the foothill of a Teochew cemetery. Together, we’ll walk down the memory lane.
Meet me on the 6th October 2024 (SUNDAY), 9am at Orchard Rendezvous Hotel (just outside the lobby), 1 Tanglin Road, Singapore 247905. Nearest MRT is the Orchard Station. This tour will end at the junction of Orchard and Killiney Roads, just next to Orchard Central.
