For the past 13 years divers representing dive associations and businesses from the tri-state area as far as Montauk come to clean the underwater areas at Orchard Beach which is part of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. The divers, in addition to beachcombers of all ages, scour the area and gather debris such as plastic bags, bottles, and cans that have been pulled in from tides and storms. The divers will also report on biodiversity and other marine life that they discover in the waters. The Auxiliary Coast Guard, assisted by paddle boarders and kayakers, provide safety for the divers.
Pelham Bay Park is New York City’s largest city park and an environmental treasure for the community that lives here and the rest of NYC!
Funding for this event was provided by the Long Island Sound Futures Fund.
