The very popular Candlelight Carol Concert returns this year.
Somtow Sucharitkul directs this traditional evening.
You’ll hear Christmas music from the 15th Century to the Present, sung in Latin, English, German, IsiXhosa, Ukrainian, and Russian by the Calliope Chamber Choir. About twenty lovely pieces of music in all and you will be able to sing along with some of them.
You’ll hear nine readings, as is the tradition made famous by the annual BBC broadcast from Cambridge since 1928 (almost a century!). But our readings are a little different because we’re a diverse and multicultural community and I take seriously Pope Francis’s statement “Tutte le religioni sono un cammino per arrivare a Dio.” Thus we’ll have some gnostic sayings from the Gospel of Thomas, Prince Vessantara giving up his children from the Buddhist scriptures in the place of the story of Abraham and Isaac, and the annunciation by the angel Gabriel to Mary as narrated in the Surah Maryam of the Qur’an, as well as the familiar passages from Isaiah, Luke, and John. Each reading will be in a different language.
