Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera is about the mythological poet Orpheus, who descends to the underworld to rescue his deceased wife, Euridice, by charming its inhabitants with his music. The story explores themes of grief, love, and the power of art, as Orpheus is allowed to lead Euridice back to the living world on the condition he does not look at her face until they reach the surface, a condition he eventually breaks, resulting in her permanent loss.
