In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday Opera Exposures a champion of accessible classical music and storytelling proudly announces Bayard Rustin: Out of the Shadows a compelling musical program celebrating the life and legacy of Bayard Rustin a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. Influenced by his Quaker values of peace and equality Rustin was a passionate advocate for both racial and LGBTQ+ rights.
This performance features a stellar lineup of artists including Nia Drummond (soprano) Dorian Lake (baritone) Teddy Balfour Austin (tenor) and Anthony Turner (narrator and adjunct professor at Wagner College).
The program will be accompanied by Jonathan C. Kelly assistant director at the Metropolitan Opera.
Through a unique blend of narration and music the program highlights Rustin’s groundbreaking contributions including his leadership in organizing the 1963 March on Washington his unwavering commitment to nonviolence and his courageous embrace of his identity during a time of profound social challenges.
