Maude Kerns Art Center Presents Two Exhibits
Tell Me a Story: Work by Jeff Leake & David Carmack Lewis
In Full Bloom: Work by Jennifer Lugris
Opening Reception: Friday, June 21, 5 – 7 pm
Exhibit Dates: June 21 - July 19
The Maude Kerns Art Center is proud to present two exhibits: “Tell Me a Story” and “In Full Bloom,” opening with a free public reception on Friday, June 21, from 5 – 7 pm. Both “Tell Me a Story” and “In Full Bloom” are on view through Friday, July 19.
“Tell Me a Story” features the work of Portland, Oregon artists Jeff Leake and David Carmack Lewis, whose intriguing approaches to their paintings enhance the aspect of narrative in their work. In the Salon Gallery is “In Full Bloom,” showcasing the work of Jennifer Lugris from Rocklin, California, who reveals the challenges and joys of motherhood in her colorful paintings.
Jeff Leake explores the intersection of culture and nature in his work, incorporating landscapes, stories, and real events. Leake says of his work: “My paintings often depict landscapes, a combination of real and imagined places, and the stories associated with them, in a style that combines elements of Bruegel, Bosch, alongside the popular history illustrations from my childhood.”
David Carmack Lewis depicts real locales that he has seen in daytime and imagines these places at night, with unexpected elements added. He describes his paintings in this way: “Here are some stories for you: stories about trees, stories about old houses and overpasses and forests and mountains and deserts and lonely places in the dark when no one else is around.”
Jennifer Lugris uses images of mothers and children and blooming plants to reveal her personal journey. The blooming plants symbolize for Lugris the realization of potential. She celebrates that she has “bloomed” as a wife, mother, and artist. Lugris says of her work: “I paint vibrant images of plants, figures, and ordinary objects from my home to elevate subtle moments around me and celebrate things that are often taken for granted.”
