You are invited to the Opening Reception for "Lilian Garcia-Roig: On-Sitefulness" on Saturday, November 16, at Valley House Gallery in Dallas, Texas. The Opening Reception is 6:00pm-8:00pm, preceded by Artist Remarks at 5:30pm.About her plein-air paintings made for her Cumulative Nature Series during residencies in New York State at Art Omi in Ghent, Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, and Millay Arts in Austerlitz, Lilian Garcia-Roig states:
"I find the passing of time and the changing of light to be essential and welcome elements in the performative nature of my on-site painting practice. While painting, I continuously focus in and out at various depths. As the light changes over time, different features become highlighted, come to my attention, and are recorded on the canvas. This method achieves an expanded sense of space and time by evoking more than is naturally seen at a single glance—a cumulative expression of the day."
Lilian Garcia-Roig was born in Havana, Cuba, reared in Houston, and lives in Tallahassee, where she was named Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor at Florida State University. She earned degrees at Southern Methodist University (BFA) and the University of Pennsylvania (MFA). In 2021, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Previously she was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, a Mid-America Arts Alliance/NEA Fellowship Award in Painting, a Skowhegan Residency, two Fellowships at The MacDowell Colony, and a Kimbrough Award from the Dallas Museum of Art. This is Lilian Garcia-Roig's 11th solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery.
A catalogue will be published in conjunction with this exhibition with an essay by Rangsook Yoon, Ph.D., Senior Curator at the Sarasota Art Museum.
