Alice by Heart is a musical with music by Duncan Sheik, lyrics by Steven Sater, and a book by Sater and Jessie Nelson. The show is loosely based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alice is reluctant to let go of Alfred, even as he edges closer to death. Through her journey in Wonderland, Alice learns to confront her grief and accept the inevitability of loss. The musical ends on a bittersweet note, as Alice emerges from the fantasy world having grown emotionally and gained the strength to face her reality.
