Opening lecture for our international research network on French philosophy and its translation to "theory" - feel free to join!KEYNOTE: What is a “French" Philosophical Concept?
UCPH, Southern Campus, Room 15A.0.13
Are there such a thing as French philosophical concepts? In this lecture, Giuseppe Bianco will center on the supposed uniqueness of French philosophy from its origins in the early 19th century. This will lead to a discussion of what may not be operative in abstracto, but which still, Bianco argues, is a symptom worthy of analysis. By examining the common idea of a national tradition through the lens of historical sociology, Bianco traces how French philosophy developed and spread over 150 years and what it incorporated and exported in the process. Such investigations allow us to reconsider current historiographies of philosophy and the construction of national canons.
Bio: Dr. Giuseppe Bianco (Cà Foscari University, Venice) is a historian of European Philosophy specialized in the 19th and 20th century. He has published extensively on French philosophers like Henri Bergson, Georges Politzer, Jean Hyppolite and Alain Badiou. At the moment, he is writing a material history of French philosophy up to 1950, including chapters on the history of philosophical lexicographies and the intense reflections on terminology that occurred between 1860 and WWI.
