The Institute of Texan Cultures opens its new exhibit, “Puro Conjunto: Border(less) Sound.” The exhibit celebrates how this uniquely Texan genre continues to thrive in San Antonio, the region, and beyond, connecting past and present through its layered musical heritage. Conjunto is more than music—it is a living record of cultural exchange, community identity, and artistic innovation. The exhibit explores conjunto music as one of Texas’s most vital and enduring cultural expressions. Rooted in working-class life, conjunto tells a story of migration, encounter and exchange, resilience, and celebration.
The exhibit will highlight the people, places, and traditions at the heart of conjunto. Museum visitors will see conjunto pioneer Bruno Villarreal’s accordion, along with artifacts central to the genre — some of which will be on display for the first time — along with loans from the community and other organizations. Additionally, visitors are invited to get hands-on with a selection of musical instruments at an interactive station on the exhibit floor.
This exhibit is generously supported by the Summerlee Foundation.
The exhibit continues through May 30, 2027
Regular hours: Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
