In honor of Women's History month, we are pleased to offer an exhibit of needlework of various types. The sampler was a right of passage for young girls to establish a skill in their repertoire to find their place in Society. Examples of quilting and cross stitch will be on display from the collections of some of our very own volunteers.
Special guest Cynthia Steinhoff, First Vice President and Program Chair for the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, will be on site showcasing her collection of antique samplers. She will be on the second floor to answer questions and discuss the history of some of the featured artisans for the pieces she will be showing.
Cynthia Shank Steinhoff grew up in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and has lived in Maryland for more than 40 years. Cindy is a member of the faculty at Anne Arundel Community College and serves as the Director of the Library. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree with a major in Library Science from Edinboro State College and a Master of Science degree in Library Science from Clarion State College, both in Pennsylvania, and a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Baltimore.
Her interest in genealogy stems from hearing stories as a child about her maternal grandmother’s family who came from Scotland. Or perhaps it was Ireland? No one knew the answer until recently, when Cousin Chuck joined a DNA research project and learned that our first ancestor to arrive in America was indeed a Scotsman. Cindy has researched another maternal line that came to Pennsylvania from Germany by 1720. She enjoys improving her research skills by attending courses offered by the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG).
Cindy weaves her interest in genealogy with collecting antique samplers stitched by young girls- including some from the Linthicum family! She researches their family histories. Her work in this area is included in a book that she co-authored, Delaware Discoveries: Girlhood Embroidery, 1750-1980, published by Biggs Museum of American Art in 2019.
Cindy often speaks to genealogy groups on topics relating to doing genealogical research. One of her presentations addresses how family names and dates stitched on a young girl’s sampler make it a source of genealogical information. She also speaks to needlework groups about the samplers in her collection.
Join us for this incredible opportunity to step back in time together.
