About this Event
Following this event, the AAAS Community Quilt Collective at MSU Detroit will host a series of quilt workshops for beginners that teach sewing machine and quilt making basics. All workshops will take place on Saturdays from 11am-2pm. At the culmination of the workshop series, the group will host an exhibition and quilt sale. All participants will be invited to display their projects and may sell some of their quilted artwork if desired. Moreover, all participants who attend 5 or more workshops will be able to take home one of the donated sewing machines for their own use at the culmination of the workshop series.
The goal of this workshop series is to share the art of African American quiltmaking traditions with new/beginner artists and to provide community members with the education and tools to continue these traditions in their communities and personal networks. This event series is a collaboration between the AAAS Community Quilt Collective and the MSU Detroit Center and is funded in part by a MSU Creating Inclusive Excellence Grant.
