Join us on the 9th of May for a look inside La Catedral Studios, a long-established home for artists, makers and creatives located just off Thomas Street. For one night only, this quirky secret space will throw open its distinctive black and white street doors to welcome the general public for an open studio event, as part of the Culture Date With Dublin 8 Festival. This is a rare opportunity to stop in and meet the artists, explore the labyrinth of individual workspaces within and perhaps catch a glimpse of Ophelia, the art studio cat.
About La Catedral Studios
Constructed in 1910, the building which now houses La Catedral Studios is intertwined with Dublin 8’s history as a centre of textile production and craftsmanship. Originally a warehouse, it was later converted into a clothing factory, which was operated by Dunnes Stores to produce items for their “St Bernard” brand. When cheaper production opportunities overseas led to the factory’s closure, the building was left to slide into dilapidation, until it caught the eye of studio co-founders Antonella Scanu and Costantino Idini. They recognised its potential, and in 2005 they began work to secure the structure and refit it as a place for artists to work and thrive.
Today, La Catedral Studios is a hub of creative activity for upcoming new artists and established names alike. The community of more than 40 creatives includes painters, illustrators, photographers, musicians, textile artists and performers, many of whom will be present at the open studio event to show their workspaces and share insights into their inspirations, work processes and what makes them tick. About the Open Studio Event
On the night, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the studios and meet with the artists. There is no cover charge, but places are limited and booking is required.
There will be three hour-long visiting sessions on the night, at the following times:
5pm- 6.00pm
6.30pm-7.30pm
8.00pm- 9pm
