TBG+S Recent Graduate Residency Award Artist Jialin Long hosts an open studio event presenting her current project in development under the working title of Bouncing up, Push me down.
In collaboration with a dancer Marion Cronin and a sound designer Hugh O’Dwyer, Long has created this dynamic moving image piece. The work-in-progress, presented as a multi screen projection, was produced during her TBG+S Recent Graduate Residency.
Bouncing up, Push me down is an immersive visual experience, delving into the complex narrative of the female mental experience within the discourse of womanhood. The work explores the constant juggling act between notions of bravery, self-love, and self-doubt influenced by external judgments.
A conceptual development of the previous work, Red Illuminates II: Instructions on Marriage and Childbearing, Long's current body of work addresses the framework of contemporary culture and explores the intersection of femininity and politics. ‘When I noticed the gender bias existing in AI imagery, I started to employ AI to alter my own photographs, starting with still life images, making an existing being into something else, with the disruptive and abrupt nature of glitches to interrupt the norm, reaching an altered state within an existing entity. During this exercise, I’m using AI as a mirror that reflects and potentially amplifies human perspectives and prejudices due to its nature in data collection from the existing visual culture'.
Jialin Long is a Chinese lens-based visual artist. Her practice focuses on issues in contemporary culture, using new methods of presentation to explore socio-political and feminist issues. Formulating alternative statements and positions, Long challenges stereotypes and rethinks issues facing marginalised communities. Using photography and artificial intelligence, she actively seeks ways to support and enhance the desired aesthetics and concepts of her intended message.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios Recent Graduate Residency Award is a professional development opportunity aimed at recent graduate artists in Ireland. Offering a large free studio for one year, artist bursary, and a variety of institutional supports allowing artists to focus their studio practices at this crucial point in their careers. It provides an opportunity for emerging artists to develop their careers in Dublin city, within the creative community of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.
Event location Description: Visitors are welcome to drop in at anytime during the gallery opening hours. Enter through the street facing gallery where our team will be present to answer questions and direct you. The event takes place in a large studio space on the 2nd floor accessible by stairs and lift. The room will be dimly lit with large projections and is standing, with optional seating available. It will take approx. 7 mins to see the works on view. There may be photography without flash during the event.
