Walk Description: Burnaby’s Metrotown is an enigma. It is the good the bad and the ugly of urban development. It stands large in its impact on Vancouver’s regional and cultural growth. As a mall it can feel antithetical to the principles of Jane Jacob’s, but as a centre of social energy it is the stage on which multiple futures have been dreamed of and lost. We will focus on transit development histories, old and new visions for the area, and memories of the evolving retail culture of Metrotown.

Walk Leader: Brendan Hurley, Brigitta Vadász-Hurley - Both leaders are life long Metrotown Mall Rats. Brendan has been involved in multiple projects in the area as a planner and designer, and Brigitta was a resident turned housing activist who was displaced from the Maywood neighbourhood.

Starting place:

Under the guideway by Bay 14 at the East Exit of Metrotown SkyTrain Station

How to recognize your walk leader(s): We will have a bright sign that says “RAD”

Accessibility Info: Busy sidewalks, Fast-paced, covering lots of ground, Family-friendly, Wheelchair user-friendly

Travel Tips: Right along the Expo skytrain line, ample parking in underground at Metrotown Centre

This event is taking place as part of the Jane’s Walk Vancouver Festival (May 2-5, 2024). Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Check out other Jane’s Walks happening this year in Vancouver here.
