Drawing upon his research project, "๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ญ ๐ท๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด, ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ช๐ฎ๐ช๐ต๐ช๐ท๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ด; ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ช๐ค ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ถ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ช๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ต๐ด ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ท๐ช๐ด๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ด๐ช๐ค", Sam will present some methods for collective improvisation based upon the melodic language of traditional irish music that he has been developing as part of his research at KASK & Conservatorium in Gent.
Comerford has been searching for ways to improvise in a group based upon the melodies of Irish dance music; a tradition made up of melodies played together in unison for dancing, where the rhythm and harmony are contained within the melody. He will present some methods to collectively expand the forms of the music, and some harmonic techniques that allow for meaningful ways of moving through harmony in folk musics outside of the diatonic, modal or drone-based frameworks that are commonly used.
