An Open Mic event is where anyone can perform their poems. You don’t need to be famous or published, anyone can have a go.
6pm- 7pm Musical performance by Andrew McNicol
Andrew McNicol Plays Didgeridoo, the Kora (West African harp), the Celtic Whistle and a range of percussion instruments from various cultures including the West African Jembe drum. He makes and plays the Ocarina or Ceramic Whistle. He currently performs as a freelance musician, and is Director of Sezu Music, a provider of contemporary music performance and workshops.
7pm- 8:30pm Poetry Open Mic featuring poet 'Prosper'
Open Mic night MC Manal Younus
Manal Younus is a freelance storyteller from Eritrea who believes that language and stories are the very fabric of our existence. Using her writing and performance, Manal explores different aspects of life from perseverance, identity, travel and truth. She speaks on issues including youth leadership, gender and female empowerment, faith, blackness, culture, language, migration, displacement, racism and interculturalism. She has been featured on ABC’s QandA, presented at the Adelaide TEDx Conference in 2016, the National Multicultural Women’s Conference of 2016, the Adelaide Festival of Ideas and Open State Festival, the Halogen Foundation’s Young Leaders Convention, The Council for International Schools Conference 2017 and James Cook University’s Young Language Ambassadors Conference of 2018 and much more.
Prosper Hakizimana is a Burundian poet whose affinity for words was realised early on through music and literature. Prosper’s writing includes popular use of metaphors, alliteration, assonance, and personification. His influences range from contemporary Hip-Hop, Indie-folk, and popular literature, to subjects of the human condition, pain, pleasure, love, loss, and the individual self, amongst others. Expect to be seeing more of Prosper and his work through various platforms and future productions.
