We are excited to invite you to an engaging lecture by Dean Cooper-Cunningham, a talented researcher who specializes in critical security studies. Dean's work explores power, identity, and foreign and security policy through feminist and queer lenses, with a focus on visual security and atrocity prevention.Description of the lecture:
We are increasingly seeing actors across the globe mobilise anti-queer positions in the form of ‘anti-woke’ discourse as a means of achieving or securing political power. From Elon Musks intent to develop ‘anti-woke’ Artificial Intelligence to Viktor Orbán’s attempts to ban Pride events in Hungary to the globalisation of ultra-conservative conferences that emphasise ’traditional family values’ and the threat of LGBT+ identities (e.g., CPAC and NatCon), there is little to suggest that the so-called ‘war on woke’ is going to abate any time soon. The purpose of this talk is to ask two questions: What is ‘woke’? And what is the place of queer analysis in understanding the current geopolitical context? It takes self-described 'anti-woke’ projects as its starting point and asks what queer politics and queer analysis can tell us about power and international relations.
The lecture will be at CSS (City Campus) in room 35-01-05
