Welcome to Okokhobayo Projects - OKHOKHOBAYO Projects is a contemporary arts and creative production company founded by acclaimed South African dance artist Asanda Ruda, a Standard Bank -Young Artist Award (Dance) winner. We were established as a strategic response to the need for sustainability, growth, and long-term viability within contemporary artistic practice.
We exist to expand our founder’s creative work into a structured and sustainable business, while remaining deeply rooted in artistic integrity, cultural expression, and innovation.
Through OKHOKHOBAYO Projects, we develop, produce, and present original contemporary dance and interdisciplinary performance works that engage with African narratives, lived experiences, memory, and transformation.
Our work operates at the intersection of artistic research, performance-making, and creative entrepreneurship. We create platforms for experimentation, collaboration, and professional development, ensuring that artistic excellence is supported by strong organisational systems and economic sustainability. In doing so, we aim to challenge the precarity often associated with freelance artistic careers and contribute meaningfully to the creative economy.
Our core activities include:
The creation and production of contemporary dance and performance works
Artistic research and development processes
Interdisciplinary collaborations across dance, theatre, music, film, and visual arts
Workshops, mentorship, and capacity-building initiatives
Cultural programming, presentations, and community engagement projects
We are committed to nurturing emerging talent, expanding access to contemporary dance, and fostering inclusive creative spaces that encourage dialogue, reflection, and innovation. Our approach is grounded in collaboration, cultural relevance, and professional excellence.
OKHOKHOBAYO Projects is proudly funded by Standard Bank - Arts, whose support affirms our vision and enables us to strengthen our operations, scale our creative output, and broaden our national and international reach. This partnership allows us to invest in artistic development, fair remuneration for creatives, and the long-term sustainability of our work.
Through OKHOKHOBAYO Projects, we continue to push creative boundaries while building a resilient and forward-looking artistic organisation—one that honours heritage, champions contemporary expression, and secures a lasting presence within the cultural landscape.
