About the Peony Garden:
Our Peony Garden, enveloping the historic North Dakota Museum of Art, reflects the enduring legacy of early settlers in North Dakota. Established in 1989, the garden surrounds the Museum, housed in a transformed 1907 gymnasium. With 120 varieties of peonies, this garden stands as a living homage to those who journeyed westward, bringing with them the seeds of culture and beauty. Designed by minimalist sculptor Richard Nonas, the garden integrates natural granite stones with lush peony plots. Each stone, paired with a bench or a peony bed, offers a unique space for contemplation and inspiration. It’s a place where art, history, and nature coalesce beautifully.
What to Expect at the Drawing Sessions:
Join us for a delightful morning in the Peony Garden where everyone is welcome to draw, regardless of skill level. Whether you're an experienced artist or someone who’s never picked up a pencil, our sessions are open to all. Enjoy the beauty of the garden and let the vibrant blooms inspire your creativity. Local artists will be on hand to offer guidance, but there’s no pressure—just come, relax, and let your imagination flow.
We honor and thank Frances Kannowski, Harold Thomforde and Greta Kessenich, whose passion has helped cultivate a stunning array of peonies that brighten our summers.
