We invite you to join us as we share some of the fashion content, stories, and conversations from our community at our Open Day for the Global Fashioning Assembly 2024.Come and engage with how we do our mahi (work), and to experience it first hand and in a real space. We are taking this as an opportunity to share the decolonising kaupapa (principles) of our museum model with a local audience and the international assembly.
We’ve created a hive of activity to explore on the day, including the following:
● Popup photography session - contributors will bring their garments to be photographed for the NZFM collection, including a live talk with photographer Denise Baynham about what she looks for, pays attention to, and considers when photographing a garment. Have something special you’d like to have shot to add to our collection on the day? Email [email protected] with your submission!
We will also Interview a contributor about their garment - history, why they have kept it, where it was worn, ‘value’ et al, original use and original photographs.
● Workshop - Welcome Back treasures from your wardrobe. How to make your clothes look their absolute best and most appealling, whether it's for selling them, to have them photographed for the Fashion Museum collection, to hand down the generations, or maybe you will want to wear them again! Led by Dianne Ludwig, creator of @Welcomeback_slowfashion Insta-shop.
● Repair and Care - keep wearing your garment. Repairs, alterations, embellishment (at the maker space). Including a workshop - how to sew on a button and how to take up a hem.
● A Little Fashion Walk - a short history and visit to Smith + Caughey’s Queen Street.
● Research workshop - How to tap into the library heritage collection of archives and photographs to learn
how to write interesting, informative, and factually accurate stories. Led by Auckland library staff.
● When Clothes Become Our Friends - a joyful and wonder-filled two-part series of interactive workshops
designed to cast our relationship with clothing into a new light. Part 1: (Jennifer Whitty) invites you into a transformative journey of unlearning, relearning, and becoming through clothing, while Part 2: (Karishma Singh Kelsey) guides you towards reconnection and acceptance through dressing as a form of conscious self-expression. These workshops transcend traditional boundaries of body-mind-clothing, encouraging you to explore the deep relationships woven into your wardrobe.
● Invitation for people to fashion themselves for a runway fashion show and/or to be photographed street tographed street style in collaboration with Viva.
● NZFM’s to fashion exhibition, first mounted in 2022 makes a re-appearance in the ground floor space for the month of October.
These, plus more interactive displays and activities for people of all ages (even kid-friendly!) to showcase the NZFM, and to explore how we can engage with fashion and its history in many ways!
The New Zealand Fashion Museum is a digital first museum that provides a platform and umbrella for all things fashion in Aotearoa (New Zealand). With no fixed physical location or collection, its activities and stories are developed in response to the concerns of the day and the questions and needs of its audiences.
Our primary source for all content is the community. This makes for a collaborative and multi-vocal museum model, bringing together objects and knowledge held by individuals and by working with institutions like libraries, universities, and museums to share their collections, archives, and spaces.
Attendance is free, and we look forward to hosting a day of activities and experiences which share our processes and values with you all, as our contribution to the vast array of GFA24 events happening in person and online around the world.
Event timetable to be released soon, keep an eye out!
This event is supported by Auckland Council and the city centre targeted rate.
