Niet aarzelen dus, komen kijken (zonder popcorn of drank) naar 'the best of the 80s' in CINEMA RITCS.

Overal in Time of the Gypsies is modder de ondergrond. Het zijn zigeuners van Joegoslavië en Italië die er onvast in rondploeteren, onverbiddelijk gedreven door scenarist-regisseur Kusturica, die een ultrarealistische wereld creëert waar men niet wil zijn; met krotten, dronkaards, verkrachters, mensensmokkelaars en huilende kinderen. Maar Kusturica (Arizona Dream) is de Joegoslavische Fellini, dus in hetzelfde Time of the Gypsies is plaats voor magie, Charlie Chaplin-vertolking, onverklaarbare genezing, verschijningen, groteske personen en flamboyante dromen. Perhan (Dujmovíc) maakt het allemaal mee. Hij leeft in een krot van een zigeunerdorp aan de rand van Sarajevo, met zijn goede oma (Adzovic), krankzinnige oom, zieke zusje en opmerkelijke kalkoen. Om zijn zusje te genezen gaat Perhan mee met de onbetrouwbare, rijke baas Ahmed (Todorovíc), die haar wel even naar het ziekenhuis van Ljubljana brengt. Meesterlijk weeft Kusturica zijn epische droom/nachtmerrie naar het enige mogelijke einde en de acteurs bewijzen hem daarbij een grote dienst door geen gas terug te nemen.

??: Everywhere in Time of the Gypsies, mud is the ground. They are gypsies from Yugoslavia and Italy who flounder unsteadily in it, inexorably driven by screenwriter-director Kusturica, who creates an ultra-realistic world where people don't want to be; with slums, drunks, rapists, people smugglers and crying children. But Kusturica (Arizona Dream) is an Eastern-European Fellini, so in the same Time of the Gypsies there is room for magic, Charlie Chaplin-performances, inexplicable healing, apparitions, grotesque characters and flamboyant dreams. Perhan (Dujmovíc) experiences it all. He lives in a slum of a gypsy village on the outskirts of Sarajevo, with his good grandmother (Adzovic), insane uncle, sick sister and remarkable turkey. To cure his sister, Perhan goes with the unreliable, rich boss Ahmed (Todorovíc), who takes her to the hospital in Ljubljana. Kusturica masterfully weaves his epic dream/nightmare to the only possible end and the actors do him a great favor by not slowing down.
