? The tradition of two decades of research activity and studio work encourages us to undertake a new educational project. The School under the auspices of the Grotowski Institute will be an extension of the current offer of short-term workshops, longer ateliers, as well as the BodyConstitution project, based on conscious, consistent and responsible work on the body and performer training. The school’s two-year program will include a year of exploring various movement and voice traditions in practice and incorporating them into acting training under the supervision of the leaders of the Studios operating at the Grotowski Institute and guest professors, as well as developing students’ own projects during the second year of education.
?The opening of Actor’s Laboratory coincides with the 25th anniversary of the death of Jerzy Grotowski, whose work was marked by constant experimentation of the craft and exploration of the art of acting. At the Grotowski Institute, activities focused on acting training have been developed since the beginning of its existence, initially in the form of workshops, since 2014 as part of the Institute’s Studios dealing with selected movement techniques/traditions and creating actor’s own training methods based on them, among others Teatr ZAR, Studio Kokyu, Studio WACHOWICZ/FRET. The BodyConstitution project allowed us to focus the achievements of the mentioned research groups in activities and reflections aimed at building a deep body culture. Actor’s Laboratory is the next consequent step in developing the educational potential of the institution, stemming from the belief that the creative development of artistic work methods is possible mainly through the constant confrontation of learned techniques with the experience, richness and variety of methods developed by teachers and artists from other traditions and cultures. In line with this assumption, the Grotowski Institute creates a space for learning from invited teachers and outstanding artists and masters of movement techniques representing different traditions and methods of working with the body (martial arts, techniques from the borders of theatre, dance and performance art). Education at the School will take place both at the practical level, as well as at the area of theoretical reflection. The programme will be complemented by meetings devoted to the tradition of Jerzy Grotowski’s Laboratory Theatre, with particular emphasis on the theatre of performances and the Theatre of Sources. An extraordinary and original combination of what the Grotowski Institute can offer with its tradition and achievements will be its residential cooperation within LEPAC (Legacy of Performing Arts Centre) and such partners as the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor CRICOTEKA, The Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), the Pina Bausch Zentrum, Joseph Beuys Estate and LAFLIS (Living Archive Floating Islands) of Eugenio Barba / Odin Teatret. The aim of the education in Actor’s Laboratory is to build a perspective of self-development, not based on instructional pedagogy (master-disciple relationship), but on self-formation based on the personal theatrical experience.
Students of the School will take part in most educational and artistic events organised at the Grotowski Institute, such as the annual Actor’s Hub project (https://bitly.ws/35whE), dedicated to key concepts of Polish laboratory theatre, Laboratory of Perception, as well as the Open University of Research (https://bitly.ws/35whT).
