About this Event
Join the National Hellenic Museum’s Online Book Club!
Facilitated by NHM's Resident Scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis, each month the NHM Online Book Club chooses a book that is either inspired by the Hellenic legacy or by a Greek American author (and sometimes both!). Then we gather to discuss the book on Zoom.
Book Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM CST
In February, we will be discussing by Eduardo Faingold
More about The Kalamata Diary :
From October 28, 1940, to February 1947, Sotiria Salivaras documented life in Kalamata, Greece, before, during, and after World War II through her detailed diary entries. In The Kalamata Greece, War and Emigration, Eduardo D. Faingold provides an in-depth analysis of these writings, situating them within the broader context of modern Greek history. He explores pivotal events such as the expulsion of the Greek minority from Turkey after World War I, Greece’s occupation by Axis forces during World War II, and the subsequent Greek Civil War. Following Salivaras’s journey from her teenage years in Greece to her adult life in Argentina, Faingold examines immigration patterns between Greece and Latin America. Drawing on extensive interviews with Salivaras and her sons, he reveals her life beyond the diary’s final entry, offering a vivid and personal perspective on the historical and social upheavals that shaped her world.
