Instructor: Nicole Clouston

In this course, youth will be introduced to a variety of techniques including sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Using the work and interests of living artists for inspiration, students will develop technical skills, individual style, and the capacity to frame their artwork in the field of contemporary art. Students will gain confidence using a variety of media to communicate their concepts, as well as the language to articulate their ideas. All levels of experience welcome!

About the Instructor: Nicole Clouston is a practice-based researcher and teacher who recently completed her Ph.D. in Visual Art at York University in Toronto. In her practice, she asks: “What happens we acknowledge through an embodied experience, our connection to a world teeming with life both around and inside us?” Nicole has exhibited across Canada and international, most recently in Detroit, Michigan. She was the artist in residence at the Coalesce Bio Art Lab at the University of Buffalo and the artist in residence at Idea Projects Ontario Science Centre’s Studio Residencies at MOCA.

Materials: Students are responsible for sourcing their own materials for online courses. For Teen Contemporary Art Studio, you will need the following:

  • A multimedia sketchbook
  • Graphite pencils
  • Cardboard (found)
  • Masking tape
  • A watercolour set (solid or liquid)
  • Paint brushes
  • Pencil crayons
