About this Event

Age: 18+

Day: Tuesday 6 classes

Start/End: Jan 19 - Feb 23

Time: 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Cost: M $125 NM $140

Code: A42

Instructor: Kate Jackson

In this course, participants will learn a variety of hand embroidery stitches. They will also be guided through a series of drawing and mark making exercises that will help them accumulate visual memories and stories that can be used as resources to develop imagery for their own embroidery designs. By the end of the course, students will have completed an embroidery sampler, and a completed design for their own embroidery project. They will also have a great start on their final embroidery and have the tools and knowledge to complete it. Each class will also include visual presentations on the history of embroidery and contemporary inspiration.

About the Instructor: Kate Jackson laboriously embroiders on perishable materials to investigate what it means to give love, time, and attention to what may soon expire. Her ephemeral works on leaves, flowers, food stuffs and utilitarian paper products, in their states of decay, allude to the fragility of our own bodies, the fleeting quality of human lives and specifically, those of our loved ones. Utilizing surfaces considered too weak to withstand needle and thread, Jackson points to ideas of loss, grieving, patience and ritual.

Kate is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. She teaches at Sheridan College as faculty in the Craft & Design Program, the Visual & Creative Arts Program and the Art Fundamentals Program. She has taught workshops to all ages across the country and shows her fragile embroidery in galleries internationally. Kate is also one of the founding members of the Toronto Jigsaw Puzzle Club and plans to open a Hamilton chapter soon.
