Onibaba (1964), directed by Kaneto Shindô, is a chilling Japanese horror set in medieval Japan. An older woman and her daughter-in-law survive by ambushing samurai, killing them, and selling their belongings. When Hachi, a neighbor, returns from war, he begins a passionate affair with the younger woman, provoking jealousy in the elder. To keep control, she uses a demonic mask to frighten her—but the mask brings a terrifying curse. Mixing desire, fear, and the supernatural, the film explores human darkness.
