One stride in 13 brings together two emerging painters working and living in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Will Sleigh and Thomas Strawbridge.
The artists respond to ideas of activating memory within specific spaces of personal experience or sites of family connection. Will and Thomas each have alternate ways of approaching unconventional materials through painting. Thomas experiments with unconventional painting materials to create surfaces that are both industrial and dreamy, utilizing unpainterly things in an exploration of painterly mark making. Whilst Will is interested in depicting obscure objects, ones that sit on the edge of familiarity and unfamiliarity with traditional approaches to painting.
Expired objects, decrepit interiors and pop cultural artifacts are all combined through the alchemy of painting.
Will Sleigh is an artist from Ōtautahi currently based in Te Whanganui a Tara and is currently completing his final year of BFA (hons) at Massey University Toi Rauwharangi.
Through his work Will investigates how people respond to spaces through their simultaneous psychological and physical experiences of it. More recently he has become interested in the bias of how we understand inhabited spaces, determined by how we are informed (or not informed) of our histories. In this case, Aotearoa’s colonial history is considered. His interest in domestic spaces comes from the shifting perspective of history, representation and experience of spaces and shifting bias. The domestic interiors are often a reflection of a broader landscape.
Thomas Strawbridge is an artist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and has recently completed a BFA (hons) from Massey University Toi Rauwharangi.

Thomas likes to build small comical worlds where hunter gatherers drag race anime girls; a biotope reflexive of a fast moving cultural landscape - which is equal parts primal, intimate, and vapid. In this land of excess, disused materials are free game, along with their discarded memories. Utilising processes of obfuscation, excavation and chemical marring of a field, maybe some of these false memories can become manifest.
