An informal chat and singing session with some of Ireland’s finest vocalists, hosted by Mick McAuley with Daibhidh Stiubhard, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh & Diane Cannon
Hailing from County Tyrone, Dàibhidh Stiùbhard sings from that deep place within which the most meaningful and meant words are found, his young life has been an exploration and excavation of song, and culture and language. In 2018 he was awarded senior traditional singing champion at the Tyrone and Ulster Fleadhs. His debut album, An Sionnach Dubh - the black fox - brings songs together from the Ulster, Irish language and Scots Gaidhlig traditions, featuring his own writing and learning and interpretations to this compilation.
A renowned artist with a proven record of performance, recording and innovation, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh is a multi-award winning traditional singer and musician from Corca Dhuibhne, West Kerry. Muireann is a leading exponent of the sean nós style, and loves to engage with audiences to share her love of the Irish song tradition. Her childhood in West Kerry saw her immersed in a rich cultural environment and vital living tradition. This was to be hugely influential on the foundation of her distinctive vocal and instrumental sound. Muireann has enjoyed a successful career as a touring artist, with over thirteen years experience as lead singer and flute player with the Irish traditional supergroup Danú, as well as a many years performing as a solo artist. She holds an MA in Traditional Music Performance from the University of Limerick. In 2022 Muireann was awarded “Best Folk Singer” at the RTÉ Radio Folk Awards, and amongst many other awards, was Amhránaí na Bliana at the TG4 Gradaim Ceoil in 2011. Muireann is also a popular television and radio presenter, having hosted a range of programmes for Irish and Scottish TV and Radio over the past 15 years, and currently presents her own music programme “Folk on One” on RTÉ Radio 1. Always keen to explore new ground, she has collaborated with many musicians in genres ranging from traditional to classical, world music to electronica. Most recently Muireann recorded “Róisín ReImagined” an album of sean nós songs arranged by contemporary Irish arrangers with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and produced by Dónal O’Connor, which garnered many 5 star reviews.
Mick McAuley is an Irish musician, composer and songwriter who has recorded and toured internationally for many years. While his music is rooted firmly in the Irish tradition, he has been part of a movement which continues to push the musical boundaries of that tradition to bring Irish music to a wider and more diverse audience around the world. As a long-time member of the Irish-American ensemble SOLAS, he has recorded and toured nine albums with them and received widespread international acclaim. The Boston Herald hailed SOLAS as "the best Irish traditional band in the world". A multi-instrumentalist, Mick plays accordion, melodeon, concertina, whistles and guitar and has been a guest on many recordings and performances including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patti Larkin, Paul Brennan (Clannad), Susan McKeown and Mick Hanly among many others. Since 2015, Mick plays melodeons for 17-time Grammy winner STING in his autobiographical theatre production "The Last Ship". His debut solo album An Ocean's Breadth (Shanachie Records) was awarded Best Celtic Album of the year by Washington Post, and Spring 2016 saw the long-awaited release of his solo album HIGHS AND BELLOWS. It is an acoustic selection of traditional and original instrumentals and songs recorded in Ireland at the turn of that year. His most recent release is a duet album with Celtic guitar wizard, John Doyle. The Irish Echo says: “There’s a ton of vibe to absorb on this album, and it’s worth every minute!!!
County Donegal songstress Diane Cannon inherited her musical talents from both sides of her family; all four grandparents were accomplished musicians and singers. As a youngster, Diane frequently won competitions and she competes successfully to this day, most recently winning first place in the prestigious Comortas Cuimhneacháin Shéain Óig Uí Thuama at Oireachtas na Gaeilge. Her long-anticipated debut album was released to great cticial acclaim, featuring many leading traditional music figures Donald Shaw, Michael McGoldrick, Neil Martin, Charlie McKerron amongst many others. Diane brings the songs and the music played by the hearth fire of a long gone Ceilí house, to the sophisticated tastes of a 21st century audience.
