“Cultivar” is a new work for The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble, commissioned by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for the Power of Trees exhibition.

Sankaram’s composition celebrates plants and trees in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden including the Magnolia Evamaria, the first magnolia cultivar with yellow flowers, originally created at the Garden; the dawn redwoods, which were believed to be extinct until they were rediscovered in the early 20th century; a weeping beech covered with carvings of visitors’ initials, the beautiful flag cherry and the humble mangrove.

Also on the program: “Apocalypse Lullaby” and other songs for the occasion.
