One Ocean WeekBergen, Norway
April 5 – 11 2025
For the third consecutive year, the City of Bergen will repeat the success of One Ocean Week from April 5 – 11, 2025, in Bergen. One Ocean Week unites globally renowned ocean experts and decision makers from across the globe to address pressing ocean affairs. The purpose is to create awareness and share knowledge about the important role the ocean has for sustainable development from a global perspective.
On Monday, April 7, 2025, national and international representatives will gather in Bergen for the high-level meeting One Ocean Summit. Here, leading experts, decision-makers, and stakeholders will discuss and address our most important ocean challenges. The high-level meeting supports the efforts for the ocean leading up to the UN Ocean Conference in Nice in June 2025. In line with the Ocean Rise & Resilience Coalition - Adapting Coastal Cities & Regions initiative, the One Ocean Summit in 2025 will have a special focus on coastal areas and sea level rise. The coastal city of Bergen aims to become part of the coalition. We wish to highlight the unique challenges cities and coastal areas face due to climate change and mobilize coastal cities both in Norway and globally for a joint effort.
The voices of the youth through the One Ocean Youth Panel continue to play an important role in One Ocean Week. In 2024, the City of Bergen established the One Ocean Youth Panel, inspired by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. This international panel aims to formulate solutions to ocean-related challenges and emphasize our collective commitment to achieving concrete changes on a global scale. Their work will continue in 2025 and the One Ocean Youth Panel contributions will be highlighted at the One Ocean Summit on April 7.
One Ocean Week Bergen 2025 contains conferences, meetings, seminars and cultural activities engaging the general public, business and industry, academia, and local and national governmental institutions and will in many ways serve as a build up for UNOC3, emphasizing Ocean action and in particular the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition for Cities and Regions. On the last day of One Ocean Week 2025 the Tall Ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl will embark on a new grand voyage with One Ocean Expedition 2025 – 2026. The year-long expedition will cover the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Visiting 28 ports where some of the highlights will be the participation in Nice during UNOC3, the North West Passage, and the West Coast of America. During port visits, the ship will be used for diplomacy, high-level meetings, conferences, school visits, exhibitions, and open ship events for the public.
During the One Ocean Expedition, the ship functions as a floating university and research vessel. The 110 year old ship is equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment that continuously collects data on the health of the ocean. One Ocean Expedition is a proud ambassador for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This global initiative launched by the UN to promote ocean research and sustainable management of the oceans. Through an extensive programme of research activities, knowledge sharing, and political dialogue, the expedition aims to inspire global engagement for a more sustainable ocean.
