Obsessive-compulsive disorder is often misunderstood.
With OCD, people have a difficult time ridding themselves of unwanted, often very scary thoughts, that are actually in complete opposition of who they are or how they feel. Thoughts tend to be irrational but the brain misfires these thoughts as threats, making them seem real. These thoughts tend to interfere with their ability to enjoy their lives because the thoughts never seem to go away, even when people place all their efforts in getting rid of them. In fact, "trying" just seems to make it worse! The thoughts surround various topics such as taboo issues to contamination, to name a few, but there are many subtypes.
People with OCD take about 10-15 years to diagnose. There may be many reasons why it takes so long to get help. However, there is shame surrounding OCD because of the content of the thoughts, and because there is judgment around the difficulty of not being able to "just" turn the thoughts off. People sometimes fear they may appear weak or like there is something wrong with them. There are helpful treatments out there!
