Join Diwa Filipino Film Festival of Seattle and Eduksine USA for a special film event on Martial Law in the Philippines on Saturday, Sept 20, from 12-8pm at the Wing Luke Museum Tateuchi Story Theatre.

Rampant inflation. Political repression. Crony capitalism. A dictator dressed as a president. This is the Philippines in the 1970s and 1980s. Diwa Filipino Film Festival of Seattle, in cooperation with Eduksine USA, is holding a special film event on September 20, 2025, on the eve of the 53rd anniversary of former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of martial law on September 21, 1972. What followed was 14 years of Marcos staying in power, the censorship of all media, and retaliation against his political opponents. After Marcos was ousted, Philippine and diasporic Filipino cinema continued to commemorate the collective trauma of Martial Law and its enduring effects to Philippine culture, politics, economy, and society. This film event features three programs of some of those critically-acclaimed films:

  • 12:00-3:00pm: Liway (2018) by Kip Oebanda and starring Glaiza de Castro, is based on a true story of a young mother who uses story-telling to protect her child from the reality of growing up in Pr*son and the difficult life she endured.
  • 3:30-5:30pm: Respeto (Respect, 2017) by Treb Monteras II, is the story of a poor aspiring rapper who crosses paths with an old poet with a haunted past as a dissident. It is preceded by a short film, Ang Amomonggo sa Aton (The Monster Among Us, 2021) by VinJo Entuna.
  • 6:00-8:00pm: One Generation's Time: The Legacy of Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes (2013) by local filmmaker Shannon Gee, tells the story of two Filipino American cannery worker activists who were murdered in Seattle in June 1981. It is preceded by the following short films: Ang Mga Alingawngaw sa Panahon ng Pagpapasya (Echoes In The Midst Of Indecision, 2015) by Hector Calma, Never Forget (2022) by Ida Del Mundo, and Revolution (2023) by Coza.
