Due to high demand, we added this second, shorter bike ride for early birders. The later, longer ride leaves North Berkeley at 10am and is currently waitlist only. Please sign up for only one ride so we can accommodate as many people as possible.
Itinerary is subject to change.
Heath Maddox, BART Manager of Bicycle and Micromobility Access Programs, and local birdwatchers will host a ~8-mile roundtrip bike ride with birdwatching stops along the way. The ride will start and end at North Berkeley Station.
We’ll bike to Cesar Chavez Park for some birdwatching then break at Roaming Bean Coffee for an optional group breakfast/coffee break. From there, the group will ride back to North Berkeley Station and say our farewells.
In addition to the expertise of local birdwatchers, we’ll have a digital guide featuring info on birds we might spot on the ride. Find the route – which is subject to change – here.
Bring your bike, helmet, and binoculars – we’ll have extras on hand to lend. You should also bring anything you need to be self-sufficient and keep your bike rolling (spare tube, patch kit, pump, etc.). If you do not have a bike, you can rent one from the Bay Wheels hub at North Berkeley Station.
This is a social pace, no-drop ride, and we can offer some assistance with trailside repair if needed, but we can’t anticipate all wheel and tire sizes.
We will gather by the outdoor station entrance by the intersection of Virginia and Sacramento streets. Look for people with bikes and BART staff holding One Book One BART signage.
Note: While we will have a digital guide available, it's never a bad idea to bring a bird guide of your own. We recommend Sibley Birds West: Field Guide to Birds of Western North America and the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of Western North America.
We encourage you to visit one of the One Book One BART indie bookstore partners to purchase guides and hear their recommendations:
- Fremont Station
– Glen Park Station
- Hayward Station
- Rockridge Station
- Orinda Station
- MacArthur Station
– MacArthur Station
For mobile apps, we recommend eBird and Merlin Bird ID.

The BART book club returns with a natural history-themed group read and three events for nature lovers of all ages and interests.
BART's book club is novel strategy for rider and employee engagement that invites members of the public to read the same book at the same time and participate in themed events in BART trains and stations.
The official selection is "Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide” (Heyday Books), a humorous, informative guide to local fauna by naturalist and conservationist Jeff Miller. Miller wrote the book to connect readers with regional fauna and inspire people to witness the Bay Area’s magnificent natural phenomena for themselves.
