About this Event

One of the UK’s most original voices on nature, Rob Cowen’s latest book, The North Road, has attracted universal acclaim: ‘Astonishing’ (The Telegraph); ‘Remarkable’ (The Financial Times), ‘Entrancing’ (The Observer).

The A1: The Great North Road. A 400-mile multiplicity of ancient trackway, Roman road, pilgrim path, coach route and motorway that has run like a backbone through Britain for the last 2,000 years. In this genre-defying and profoundly personal book, Rob weaves his own histories and memories with the layered landscapes.

This is the story of coming to terms with time past and time passing, and the roads that lead us to where we find ourselves.

Rob is joined by Jenn Ashworth. Her memoir The Parallel Path: Love, Grit and Walking the North was hailed by David Nicholls as ‘touching, thoughtful and frank.’

Burnt out and longing for an escape, Jenn emerged from lockdown with a compulsive need to walk - and to walk away. Taking on Wainwright’s epic coast to coast path, walking became an act to reconnect and re-engage. But the walk's tricky terrain is not the only thing standing in Jenn's way. Jenn is confronted with a life-altering diagnosis - and a new path of self-discovery.

Jenn Ashworth is also the author of the novels A Kind of Intimacy, which won a Betty Trask Award, Cold Light, The Friday Gospels, Fell and Ghosted: A Love Story, which was shortlisted for the Portico Prize. Her memoir, Notes Made While Falling, was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize.
