About this Event
Join the Sierra Club Winding Waters Group for a timely and visually rich presentation with Chris Riccardo, Midwest Organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, exploring the future of some of America’s most iconic public lands and why decisions being made in Utah matter far beyond the Southwest.
From Bears Ears to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah’s red rock country holds irreplaceable cultural history, wildlife habitat, and vast wilderness landscapes shaped by thousands of years of Indigenous stewardship. These lands are living cultural landscapes, central to the identity, traditions, and sovereignty of many Tribal Nations.
Today, those protections are facing renewed uncertainty. Fast-moving political actions in Washington are quietly targeting the management and legal foundations of national monuments, with the potential to unravel safeguards that took decades to establish. With little public visibility and limited opportunity for input, these efforts could permanently reshape the future of some of the country’s most sacred and significant places.
This presentation will explore what is at stake, the leadership of Indigenous nations in protecting these landscapes, and how public-lands decisions ripple across the Midwest and Great Lakes region. Expect stunning imagery, stories from the field, a behind-the-scenes look at current policy threats, and clear ways you can help defend wilderness, cultural heritage, and the rights of future generations.
