Widely recognized for her large-scale and intricately designed tapestries, Teresa Lanceta was recently awarded the Spanish National Prize for Fine Arts, Spain’s highest honor for visual artists. With a Ph.D. in art history, Lanceta has drawn inspiration from Roman and Moroccan weavers, but there are also links to modern abstract art.

Lanceta traveled extensively throughout Spain and Morocco to study diverse weaving traditions. She engages with the history of fabrics and domestic labor while also questioning the boundary between “art” and “craft.”

Two works titled La Orden de la Banda (The Order of the Band) that are currently at the Meadows may remind many here of Navajo rugs, except that Lanceta’s are more boldly asymmetrical and brilliantly colored than most.

Comprising only nine works, two of them pencil-on-paper designs for others, this is the Meadows’ first show devoted to a textile artist. It’s part of an ongoing collaboration with Fundación ARCO, a leading promoter of contemporary Spanish art.

Cristina Aldrich is the 2023-2024 Center for Spain in America (CSA) Curatorial Fellow at the Meadows Museum in Dallas, Texas. Her research explores various aspects of Spanish art, including collection history, materials and techniques in the Middle Ages, and the nineteenth-century reception of Islamic Spain (the subject of her forthcoming exhibition). Her dissertation focuses on how polychrome wooden sculptures of the Virgin and Child in Castile and Leon shaped both individual and communal identity in lay and monastic contexts during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
