On Set With Megan Hunter. Screening of 'The End We Start From'

Murray Edwards College is thrilled to launch our brand new ‘On Set With…’ Series.

‘On Set With…’ is an ongoing series of film screenings, designed to celebrate women’s achievements in cinema, and to draw attention to different roles within the film industry. Each film screening is followed by a Q&A session with a filmmaker who was involved in the project, and a drinks reception.

We would like to welcome you to a screening of The End We Start From, which was adapted from a book by Megan Hunter. Megan will join us for a Q&A with Dr Laura McMahon after the film, which will be followed by a drinks reception.

The End We Start From. When an environmental crisis sees London submerged by flood waters, a young family is torn apart in the chaos. As a woman (Jodie Comer) and her newborn try and find their way home, the profound novelty of motherhood is brought into sharp focus in this intimate and poetic portrayal of family survival.

Speakers:

Megan Hunter is a prizewinning novelist, poet and screenwriter. Her first novel, The End We Start From, a story of new motherhood in climate catastrophe, was published by Picador (UK) and Grove Atlantic (US) in 2017, and translated into ten languages. It was shortlisted for Novel of the Year at the Books Are My Bag Awards, longlisted for the Aspen Words Prize, was a Barnes and Noble Discover Awards finalist and won the Forward Reviews Editor’s Choice Award. It was adapted for feature film by Alice Birch, starring Jodie Comer and directed by Mahalia Belo. Her latest novel, The Harpy (2020), also published by Picador (UK) and Grove Atlantic (US) is a mythical, yet contemporary novel of revenge and metamorphosis. It was Indie Book of the Month, and translated into multiple languages; she is currently adapting it for television with Red Planet Pictures. In addition to novels and screenplays Megan also writes poetry and essays; her writing has appeared in the White Review, the TLS, Literary Hub, Five Dials, Ladybeard, Aesthetica Magazine, BOMB, and elsewhere.

Laura McMahon is Associate Professor in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge. She is author of Cinema and Contact (2012) and Animal Worlds: Film, Philosophy and Time (2019), and co-editor of Animal Life and the Moving Image (2015). She is currently working on a project on feminist historiography and archival engagements in recent moving image practice.
