๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฒ: Sofia Coppola created a period drama that stands apart from the rest, presenting a daring take on the life of the doomed queen of France. Coppolaโs vision of lavish costumes and production design is charged with an indie rock soundtrack set to The Cure, Bow Wow Wow, and The Strokes (just to name a few). Initially panned by some critics upon release due to its loose interpretation of historical events, MARIE ANTOINETTE has been reevaluated over the years for its stylistic approach. Starring Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette and Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI.
๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Ever since the age of 15, when she interned with Chanel, Sofia Coppola has always had one foot firmly planted in the world of fashion. With MARIE ANTOINETTE being a period piece, Coppola worked closely with costume designer Milena Canonero, who recalls being handed a box of pastel-colored macarons as inspiration for the filmโs vibrant ensembles. The candy-like costumes showcase Antoinetteโs exuberant lifestyle and are historically accurate but with a fantastical twist to them. Antoinetteโs journey in the film begins in pale yellows and blues, reflecting her youth and innocence. During her wilder years, her look changes into brighter pinks until the final act, where her gowns take on darker tones. Canonero won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and MARIE ANTOINETTE would retroactively be regarded as a staple fashion film due to its eye-catching visual aesthetic.

๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ From Marilyn's iconic white halter dress to Brando's leather jacket, it's no secret that some costumes make a lasting impression both in a viewerโs mind and in their closet. Throughout the year we will delve into cinemaโs greatest style hits and explore how clothing and fashion can be woven together to propel a filmโs story. Not only will we highlight the work of iconic designers like Edith Head and Coco Chanel, but we will also exhibit films where the costumes are given a starring role.
