A listening session and performance by composer and sound artist Marcus Pal
About this Event

For On dual-formed concealing, Marcus Pal will present new work for spatial sound synthesis in a framework of precision-tuned harmony, drawing on principles of tuning from the work of their mentors Catherine Christer Hennix and La Monte Young. Exploring the dynamic co-emergence of interiority and exteriority in auditory perception, this performance focuses on the forms of intersubjective attention that may arise from the complex interaction between acoustics and embodied psychoacoustics—i.e. how sounds are formed and deformed by the human cognitive system.
The performance will take place in Géza as a seated listening experience, preceded and succeeded by the presentation of a sustained sound environment in the same space. Due to the sound’s sensitivity for bodily movement, and since some of the primary effects of the work occur as sonic afterimages, audience members are encouraged to arrive in time for the start of the performance and stay for the duration of the hour-long presentation.
About the artist

Marcus Pal is a sound artist, composer, and theorist working with harmonic sound. Their work focuses on the phenomenology of intensity, clarity, and possibility as it manifests in the perception of tones, chords, harmony, and other forms of harmonicity. Marcus is interested in how our ways of conceptualizing harmonic sound, and perceptual experience more generally, limit and shape the possibility space of listening. In their theoretical work, they are drawing on tenth- and eleventh-century Buddhist and Pratyabhijña Śaiva epistemology and philosophy of mind. As a composer, Marcus works extensively with just intonation harmony and composes for both acoustic instruments and digital sound synthesis. In 2013 and 2014, Marcus studied with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela while living in the Church Street Dream House in New York. Since 2014, they have worked regularly with Catherine Christer Hennix. They also have a long-standing collaboration with Ellen Arkbro.
