Music has been my therapy throughout my life. As a young child, I remember music in my life. When I was very young, my dad played guitar in both a polka band and a country western band, and I remember jam sessions in our dining room with much singing and merrymaking. Our kitchen radio was often tuned into the folk songs of my older sisters’ generation. My dad died when I was just 8 years old, and I used music to soothe my broken heart, listening to WDGY and songs including Imagine by John Lennon and Let it Be by the Beatles. Every boyfriend had songs attached to them, including Paradise By the Dashboard Lights by Meatloaf (the boy stole the album; I broke up with him and kept the album) and Still by Lionel Richie (I married this guy!). While raising my kids, my vibe was drawn to Bonnie Raitt and other strong female performers. As my kids became adults, I shifted more into Blues and Bluegrass. I have enjoyed most music throughout my life, even watching gang rappers one night for the experience of it all! When Clarence and Mom passed, I took to calming music found in my yoga, mantra, and meditation collection. Not everyone uses music as therapy, but I’m convinced it can heal.
Sound came first. The Gospel of John proclaims, “In the beginning was the word. And the Word was with God and the word was God.” Every ancient culture linked sound to their health and vitality, with traditions of words, sound, music, and chanting to connect with their deity or Spirit. Ayurvedic medicine (Ancient Indian medicine still practiced today) believes that the body is held together by sound, and the presence of disease means a body is not in harmony.
Vibration is prana, the life force energy that always exists, and if we sit in silence, we can hear it. It is the hum of the Universe known as ajapa. It’s not separate from us; it’s part of us. OM is the seed sound that is present and dormant in all other sounds.
Doctor Mitchel Gaynor takes the sound-healing connection further through his research, believing that sound’s vibration affects the cells and organs, taps into our emotions and the brain, and connects us to a higher spiritual dimension. Sound therapy is the next frontier of Holistic healing. Combining music and sound with imagery has proven to be a powerful healer for the immune system, improving stress hormone levels and immune antibodies. (The Healing Power of Sound book by Dr. Gaynor) And Sound Healer Jonathon Goldman states that frequency plus intention equals healing.
In celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in our Northern Hemisphere, I invite you to join me and special guest sound healer and yogi Elle Allen in an outdoor sound healing workshop and yoga practice.
Our OM Organic Movement and Sound Workshop will offer us exploration time to feel sound and vibration in our bodies, to determine where we might be out of harmony, and with that data, to have the prescription for entraining our frequency for us to heal.
Our workshop will begin with a sound healing yoga practice, followed by exploration of the various frequencies of the Solfeggio Healing tones. We will end the session being guided by Elle in a Healing Sound Bath session. Bring a journal to write in!
