About this Event
Olongapo Disco: Dreaming New Myth Across the Diaspora
by Babay L. Angles / Angelica Janabajal Tolentino / Ifadoja Oyajokun
This year, through a series of public workshops, local artists/activists/community members have created a community sculpture, Doña Sueña, who transmutes intergenerational grief into healing and joy. We are inspired by our archive of BIPOC ancestral joy/grief technologies including rhythms, myths, processions, garments, dance, ritual, and environmental/political/social activism. Artists and community collaboratively designed an artistic joy centered creature to address a community problem within South East San Diego and beyond, answering the question: “What are the diasporic ancestral joy technologies within San Diego that we need to remember and create to survive and thrive?”.
We have visually, sonically, and kinesthetically integrated historical experiences of joy and struggle. Despite centuries of systemic oppression our community has endured, our work is a mobile altar of resilience.
WDC Exchange Pavilion is hosting a workshop lead by Babay L. Angles. We will be exploring the question, What are the ancestral joy technologies that we need to remember and create to survive and thrive? We may explore joy technologies, movement, song, rhythm, and garments our own diasporic ancestral legacies have used throughout history. Participants will be able to add their ancestors names, lands, and dreams they have onto Doña Sueña, our mobile altar. We will gather to remember/remix how to pray, move, and dream our freedom.
We are excited to share this beautiful prayer and dream of solidarity with you all.
